On Wednesday, March 04, 2009, the Senate Higher Education Committee unanimously passed SB 606 relating to the prepaid college program. The bill travels next to the Senate Higher Education Appropriations Committee. Sponsored by long time FAPSC Champion Sen. Steve Wise, the bill revises provisions relating to the transfer of benefits received from the Florida Prepaid College Program to private and out-of-state colleges and universities and to career centers. This provides students more choices when selecting a college/university. The bill helps our sector by allowing educational institutions that are eligible to particpate in federal student financial aid programs tp participate in the prepaid plan. Currently only SACS and ACICS accredited institutions are eligible. Learn more

The U.S. Education Department on Saturday published additional guidance about how it plans to distribute more than $50 billion in the coming months to help states stem cuts to education programs. While the guidance offers significantly more detail than has been previously available -- noting, for instance, that in applying for money from the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, states must assure that they will "establish and use pre-K-through-college and career data systems to track progress and foster continuous improvement" -- it still leaves many questions unanswered.
