FAPSC Advocacy Event Held Is a Success

Over 40 career college leaders and professionals attended FAPSC annual FAPSC day event, held February 4-5 in Tallahassee. Attendees visited 100 offices during the event.  FAPSC day offers participates an opportunity to share their schools' state legislative and regulatory priorities, concerns, strategies and tactics with advocacy leaders. This event focused on key educational issues that FAPSC will address in the coming legislative session, such as state nursing education requirements, dual enrollment, transfer of credit and student funding.  Click here to download FAPSC 2014 agenda.  Regular session opens March 4.

FAPSC day is an event that all members are encouraged to attend. Attending FAPSC day will help empower you to be an advocate for your students; the career college profession and the future of education. I had the pleasure of attending FAPSC Day in Tallahassee for the first time this year and the experience was so energizing and the outcome so fruitful that I will plan to attend every year from now on. I was not sure what to expect from the experience, but was pleasantly surprised. Appointments with House Representatives and Senators had been pre-scheduled throughout the day, where participants were to meet with the legislators within the districts where their institutions are physically located, as well as others, to communicate legislation that is supported by FAPSC to assist our sector. In addition, where appointments could not be scheduled, we were given the opportunity to meet with legislative aides to communicate the FAPSC agenda. Participants were assigned to teams, pairing up experienced participants from past years with newbies such as myself, which greatly eased my mind and allowed me to be an observer on the first few visits but feeling like a pro by the end of the day. To be able to get face to face with so many legislators in one day was phenomenal and something that I could never have accomplished on my own. An unexpected outcome of the experience was how open so many legislators were to agreeing to visit my campus when they returned to their home districts. I have sent letters of invitation to legislators inviting them to visit my school numerous times in the past to no avail. But when meeting with the legislators face to face, they were very receptive and many genuinely excited about the idea. An unexpected bonus of the event was a scheduled meeting with Will Weatherford, Speaker of the House, accompanied by Jeanette Nunez, Education Committee member and Chair of the Higher Education & Workforce Subcommittee, as well as a visit with Governor Scott.  As with everything FAPSC does, the event was extremely beneficial and rewarding.

Thank you so much for FAPSC Day! The opportunity to speak with Florida Representatives and Senators and have the time to provide information on our sector is really an honor. Each of the members of the House and Senate I spoke with were interested in the issues within our sector. I also appreciated the spirit of FAPSC members who put aside their individual school focus and spoke with one voice for our entire sector. Many thanks to you and FAPSC for arranging the legislative appointments and making the day such a tremendous success.

Spotlight of FAPSC Career Servcies Administrator of the Year: Marbelin Perez

Marbelin Perez from Universal Career School in the Miami suburb of Sweetwater received a top honor from FAPSC, being named the 2013 Career Services Administrator of the Year.

Marbelin is a graduate, with honors, from Universal Career School, and her experience was such a positive one that she chose to help students find rewarding opportunities through career placement. Marbelin added creative initiatives in the Career Service Department at her campus to expand the programs available to better prepare students for the workforce. She takes care and pride with each student she works with – from the job search to eventually retaining employment.

Congratulations to Marbelin and kudos on a job well done!

ABHES - National Conference and Christopher J. Eaton Celebration of Life Luncheon

This year’s National Conference will be held at the magnificent Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The Conference will begin with a welcome reception at 5:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, with all breakout and other sessions held Thursday and Friday, February 27-28, 2014.

To register for the conference, workshops, and or extracurricular events, simply visit the ABHES website or click https://www.abhes.org/workshop_registration. Registrations for ALL EVENTS are to be completed online. All major U.S. credit cards accepted.

For those interested in attending only the Celebration of Life luncheon on Thursday, February 27, at 12:30 p.m., the fee is $50.00. The luncheon is being held in memory of Chris Eaton, former Associate Executive Director, who passed away suddenly last August. The details of a scholarship program, in memory of Chris, will be announced during the luncheon. In order that we may provide the Gaylord with an accurate number of attendees for lunch, please send an email to Laurie Hart, lhart@abhes.org if you are interested in attending only the luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon can be purchased on-site with a major credit card, check or cash.


Feds Launch New Online Consumer Complaint Reporting System for Veterans

With a cost of about $30 billion since 2009 to help 1 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars go to school, the federal government has been increasingly vigilant in ensuring the money spent helps veterans transition to the civilian workforce. Along with increased vigilance, there has been increased scrutiny of higher education institutions, with a particular focus on career colleges.

In the context of this heightened scrutiny, the FTC, Defense Department and VA have created a new online portal in collaboration with the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that veterans and servicemembers can use to file consumer complaints about education institutions. Students can file complaints with the VA and DOD directly about the cost of attendance, marketing, graduation rates, program quality, employment prospects, and course credit.

For institutions seeking ways to enhance the level of service they provide to military students and graduates, the following courses offered in the FAPSC Online Training Center may complement existing efforts: CS108 – Supporting Veterans in Becoming Gainfully Employed and CM104 – Compliant Interactions: Acting with Integrity.

Datamark Changes Name to Helix Education

Full Sail University Adds Music Festival to 5th Annual Hall of Fame Celebration Schedule - February 19-21, 2014
