Like many migrant workers, Immokalee’s Maria Segura didn’t know how to read or speak English. Like her parents before her and their parents before them, the 43- year-old mother of four thought she would end up working the fields for the rest of her life.
Then she stepped into a Bush family literacy program, and everything changed.
A high school dropout, Segura learned to read, learned English, got her GED and in 2009 graduated from Southwest Florida College in Fort Myers. Today, she’s the lead preschool teacher at Immokalee’s Family Literacy Academy.
Former first lady Barbara Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush celebrated Segura’s accomplishment as well as the thousands of people their foundation has helped at Friday night’s 12th annual Celebration of Reading at the Hyatt Regency in Bonita Springs. Click here to read the article in length.

We are ready for a new look and invite all graphic design and creative arts students attending FAPSC member school's to enter.
The winning logo will be reproduced and used in all FAPSC print and electronic communication tools. Three finalists will be chosen to present their designs during the April 11, 2012 FAPSC board of directors meeting in Tampa, offering an excellent opportunity for students to receive real-world presentation experience. The winning logo design will be revealed in July during the FAPSC annual conference at the Turnberry Isle Resort in Miami. The winning student designer will receive $500 and a one-night stay at the resort during the conference.

FAPSC is seeking a new logo that showcases the diversity of the 900 licensed private career schools, colleges and universities that make up FAPSC.

We are less than one month away from the April 06, 2012 deadline for scholarship applications.
Currently, FAPSC has only received 17 eligible applicants. There is still time for participating institutions to get out and visit your high schools, career academies, GED testing centers and local workforce offices to promote your schools scholarships.
FAPSC has offered schools a variety of tools to promote the program such as press release template for your school's use, flyers, posters and applications. We encourage all of our participating institutions to download the press release template and send to your contacts. All you need to do to download the template is click on theMembers Only Center located on our website www.FAPSC.org which is located underneath the Membership tab to download theses items electronically. Once you are logged in you will need to use the following secure password: 2012.
We encourage all participating schools to add a direct link to the FAPSC scholarship application for additional exposure. Also, please use the FAPSC member logo and post it on your website which is also available to download in the Members Only Center on the FAPSC website.

Many service members in our Armed Forces select private career institutions because of their military-friendly approach and supportive environment. Our military students face challenges every day to meet their responsibilities in the Armed Forces in defending our nation.
In addition to their military commitment, they also commit to further their education and pursue another career, spending time to meet the requirements of their courses. This situation becomes complicated when the student is faced with orders for deployment or a change of duty station. At this moment, the institution’s support system engages the student to provide academic advising and tutorial services. Another benefit we offer the service member is an opportunity to request a leave of absence without any penalty.
