Legislative Visits Happening in Florida

We asked you to share your legislative visits with us in last month's E-Flash. A huge thank you to those who shared the following:

On June 15, 2011 Lincoln Technical Institute, Fern Park Campus hosted the office of the Florida House of Representatives for Representative Scott Plakon, District 37. Brent Riggle, Legislative Assistant to Representative Scott Plakon and Jennifer Marquez, District Secretary met with Justin Berkowitz, Executive Director, Gabrielle Hawkins, Director of Education, and Ron Lewis, Director of Admissions. During our one hour meeting we toured the campus and met with faculty and staff and talked about our student outcomes and what Lincoln Technical Institute is doing to make an impact in Central Florida.

Brent Riggle, Legislative Assistant to Representative Scott Plakon, said “I am very impressed with Lincoln Technical Institutes student outcomes and what the campus is doing to make a difference in Central Florida” and “I am looking forward in working with Lincoln Technical Institute in the future”.

During the tour our guests met with students and faculty and learned about the different programs and were very impressed with our simulation labs and classrooms.

At the end of the meeting, we made arrangements for Representative Plakon to join our campus for our ribbon cutting ceremony with our new building remodel in July 2011.

Justin Berkowitz, Campus Director, Lincoln Technical Institute, Fern Park

DeVry University Orlando campus hosted Representative Plakon and Senator Siplin and his wife.  Both were very gracious with their time, spending an hour with faculty, staff and students; touring the campus and finding out more about who we are and what we do.

Great to see so many of our institutions actively involved in telling their story!

Steve Brown, Presidet DeVry University, Orlando Campus

Cracking the Mystery of the Media Interview

Several career college administrators and presidents got a taste of what it’s like to speak to the media recently at the FAPSC media training workshop in Orlando.

The training dropped the veil of mystery surrounding media interviews and allowed participants to master a 30-second delivery of FAPSC messaging.

Participants received on-camera coaching from Otis Wragg and Jamie Floer, APR, of Wragg & Casas Public Relations. Full Sail University provided the space and audio-visual equipment for the morning and afternoon workshops.

The high-definition TV playback left no stones unturned. Participants immediately detected ways to improve their techniques: “Smiling is OK even when it’s serious.” “Know when to stop talking!” “Practice makes perfect.”

A survey revealed that all participants found the workshops relevant and informative. One participant commented that the training heightened their awareness of how to interact on film. Another said they learned how to react, know what to expect and how to stay in control during an interview.

A Media training workshop will be offered August 4, 2011 at the FAPSC Annual Conference at Turnberry Isle Resort in Aventura by invitation only.

STEP Community Partners have stepped up to the call to action to help build this initiative far beyond initial expectations. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response STEP has filled its calendar for June and July Success Path sessions and will be offering its first community sessions in July. Community Partnerships have been developed with such organizations as Goodwill, Kissimmee Parks and Recreation, Central Florida Employment Council, Christian HELP, Fifth Third Bank and Wachovia Bank just to name a few.

To Mentor or Not to Mentor, that is the Question......

You have heard it before and I will say it again, our sector is changing so we must adapt to deliver what we are promising our students.

That is why FAPSC is establishing a mentor program to assist our member schools/colleges with challenges they face on a daily basis in running their institutions. This program will allow them to tap into the knowledge of their more experienced peers who can guide and advise them and also help develop less-experienced employees.

The areas of focus FAPSC is seeking mentors in are as follows: Admissions, Accreditation, CIE Licensure, Curriculum/Instruction, Financial Aid, General School Management, Student Services and Workforce Boards.

FAPSC is seeking mentors to coach and take an active role in contacting mentees, providing resources and assistance, and follow through with their progress.

The time commitment to mentor someone is small compared to the time and energy we all expend trying to resolve  negative press or fixing an error.

Consider giving back to the sector you created by serving as a mentor. Click here to download our mentor questionnaire.

If you have questions regarding this program, please contact FAPSC at (850) 577-3139 or via email mail@FAPSC.org.
