We have all been victims of double standards: men vs. women, siblings, in the workplace and now by the government. Our sector is now under more scrunity than ever and it is important to share information to support our students.
Career College Central has uncovered double standard messages and is posting them to a website.
FAPSC Region V will host a Meet Your Candidates event on August 31 from 1:30-3:00 PM, at Dayonta College. Come meet and mingle with candidates seeking election to the state legislature as well as build connections and relationships with other private career schools.
This is a FREE event. Register by using this link.
Each year FAPSC opens nominations to the general membership to honor colleagues in the career college sector. These awards are annouced at our annual conference. This year our conference was held in Hollywood, Florida at The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa on July 13-16, 2010. Since some of you did not get a chance to attend this event we will highlight an award winner each month in our e-Flash.
This month we will highlight our Administration & Management Administrator of the Year, Ernesto Perez, Dade Medical College
Mr. Perez' vision and leadership has enabled Dade Medical College to double in size twice within the last three years. He created the "Adopt-a-School" program which has to date donated more $58,000 to high schools around its four campuses, supporting programs such as performing arts, marching band, a health and science academy, a student incentive program and more. He developed a Practical Nursing diploma program and a Nursing Associate of Science in 2009 2010 he oversaw the creation of a new Bridge Program in Nursing Associate of Science and in a Medical Billing and Coding diploma program. Also in 2010 he relaunched a Healthcare Management Associate of Science degree program. Through his direction Dade Medical has added more than 20,000 square feet of class and lab space to the Miami and Hialeah Campuses, opened a new campus in the city of Homestead and launched a new campus in Hollywood.

The renewal of Homestead’s historic downtown district is a high priority of the Homestead Mayor and City Council. In September 2009, Dade Medical College opened the Homestead campus in the Downtown area on North Krome Avenue and 4th Street. The college operates four campuses in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and offers diplomas or an Associate of Science degree in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound, Massage Therapy, and Medical Assistant programs.
Since its inception, the school created 50 new jobs and plans to add another 100 employees as a result of a planned enrollment increase. There are over 200 students enrolled at the Homestead campus now.
Ernesto Perez, CEO of Dade Medical College, recently donated more than $8,000 to renew and maintain Paradise Way, the promenade immediately north of the Art South Sanctuary building. Read more.

September 8th is International Literacy Day, and Florida Governor Charlie Crist has again extended his support by signing a proclamation recognizing September as Florida Adult & Family Literacy Month.
FLC is partnering with the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Parks Service to recognize and celebrate this worthy cause next month. This year, however, we've added an extra element to the partnership - five regional community events to promote adult and family literacy. These events will take place at state parks in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Apopka, Sarasota and Hobe Sound. They are being organized by local planning committees comprised of area adult education and literacy programs, libraries, the parks and other community stakeholders. Please click here for information on the events.
I encourage you to support these efforts by joining one of the committees and/or encouraging your students, teachers and volunteers to attend an event. Also, state parks throughout Florida are offering free admission the weekend of September 10-12, when visitors present a library card, library book or make a book donation.
If you cannot attend one of the events, I encourage you to consider holding a literacy month event of your own! The website provides some event ideas suitable for community literacy celebrations.
Good luck and contact the Florida Literacy Coalition if you are planning an event. The would love to add your event information to their state calendar.
