Crist signs 911 bill

Sarasota Herald Tribune

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist signed into law on Thursday a bill mandating that all 911 operators get state certification and at least 232 hours of standardized training. The law is a result of mishandled 911 calls that might have prevented the murder of Denise Lee in 2008. Lee, 21, was caring for her young sons when she was abducted from her North Port home by Michael King, a plumber who lived two miles away. At least four people called 911 on the night of Lee's kidnapping, including one caller who saw what turned out to be Lee in a car with her kidnapper. The caller followed Lee and gave 911 workers a detailed description of her location, but no officers were sent to help. Read more.

The New Health Care Economy: Can Supply Meet Demand?

Article published by FAPSC Board of Director, Randy Proto

Then imagine you discover there's no one to take your x-rays, draw your blood, perform your EKG, provide the first ultrasound of your new baby, register you as a patient, or provide the nursing and other services that constitute the bulk of the time all patients spend in the system.

It's a scenario that could play out for all of us, if the supply of educated workers doesn't keep pace with the demand for services. Read More.
